HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE FOR MAGAZINE DESIGN AND LAYOUT?
I prefer working hourly, because in most cases is impossible to estimate how much time a job will take, it depends on the complexity of the design, number of pages, revisions etc. For an average, simple 24-page magazine I need cca 7-10 days – if all the images and the text are already finished and well-organized. It's always recommended to allow extra time for possible revisions.
WHAT PAYMENT METHODS DO YOU ACCEPT?
Direct bank payment.
WHICH IS THE BEST WAY TO ORGANIZE FILES?
Articles as Word files, images separately as .jpg, .png, .tif, .eps. Create folder for every article and belonging images (one article+images = one folder). I also need Table of Contents with correct order of articles or chapters. Select all folders, create .zip file and send it via WeTransfer or Dropbox. It is very important that you proofread all articles before you send them to me. Of course, there is always a possibility that you notice some typos when layout is already finished, but if you decide to add, remove or replace sentences, paragraphs or images, I might have to adjust layout again and it takes time.
IMAGE RESOLUTION AND QUALITY – WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Great, high quality images are key for creating beautiful design. If you don't have your own images, you can find them on microstock sites, like Adobe Stock. There are also some free sites with good images, but not as much choice as in microstock. Finding random images on Google is never a good idea, they are mostly in low resolution and copyrighted, you can get in trouble for using them without permission.
The image quality for press-ready publications is best at 300 dpi. For digital publications recommended resolution is 150-200 dpi. Resolution better than that is always welcome, but not necessary. A little lower resolution is still OK, but if it is too low, images will turn out blurry or pixelated.
Examples in pixels:
A4 paper (210x297 mm), full-page vertical image: for press (300 dpi): 2480x3508 px, for web: 1240x1754 px (150 dpi).
Letter-size paper (8.5x11 inches), full-page vertical image for press (300 dpi): 2550x3300 px, for web: 1275x1650 px (150 dpi).
WHICH FORMAT WILL I RECEIVE AS A FINISHED PROJECT?
You will receive a finished project as PDF, unless we agreed otherwise.
